His life irrevocably changes after meeting Inori Yuzuriha, whose capture by the quasi-governmental GHQ forces him into action. While attempting to deliver a mysterious item called the Void Genome to Gai Tsutsugami of the resistance group Funeral Parlor, Shu is caught in a violent clash between the factions. During a desperate rescue mission where he shields Inori from a mechanical Endlave unit, the Void Genome fuses with his right arm. This traumatic event grants him the 'Power of the King,' an ability to extract physical manifestations of people's hearts known as Voids. Initially refusing Gai's invitation to join Funeral Parlor, Shu is eventually compelled to become involved after his classmate Yahiro Samukawa betrays him to the authorities. Despite his initial reluctance and resentment toward Gai, whom he mistakenly views as a rival for Inori's affection, Shu gradually earns respect for the leader's tactical genius while balancing his dual life between school and resistance operations.

The Burden of Forgotten Memories

As Shu delves deeper into the conflict, he is plagued by fragmented flashbacks regarding a horrific past he has repressed. The truth surfaces during a confrontation with Yu, another wielder of the Power of the King, revealing that his childhood friend Gai was once known as Triton. Ten years prior, Shu's older sister Mana rescued Triton, but she had unknowingly become the first victim of the Apocalypse Virus. As the virus drove her insane and twisted her feelings for her brother into a desire to start a new race, Gai attempted to expose this truth on Christmas Eve 2029. However, Mana manipulated Gai into shooting himself before Shu arrived at the scene. When Mana proposed marriage to Shu to propagate the virus, his horrified rejection labeled him a monster, causing her to lose control and unleash the outbreak known as 'Lost Christmas.' This trauma forced Shu to bury these memories until he regained them to stop Keido from transplanting Mana's soul into Inori, ultimately forcing him to kill Gai to free his sister's spirit.

The Fall of Leadership

Following the resolution of the initial virus outbreak, Shu and his allies find refuge at Tennouzu High School, which has been converted into a refugee center under siege by the Anti-Bodies. Amidst chaos and despair, Shu assumes the role of student council president, initially ruling with dignity and rejecting a discriminatory Void-ranking system proposed by Yahiro that would ration vaccines based on one's utility to the group. However, the death of his friend Hare during a failed vaccine retrieval mission shatters his resolve, driving him to implement the very ranking system he once despised. His descent into authoritarianism culminates in betrayal by Arisa Kuhouin and his own students. In a final act of retribution, the resurrected Gai appears and severs Shu's right arm, transferring the Power of the King back to himself.
