Secret of Mana Codexery

Wind

A howling gust that scythes through every foe on the field.

Wind

Wind is one of the four foundational elemental attack spells in Secret of Mana, representing the cutting, sweeping force of the atmosphere. In a game where the three heroes each command a distinct combat style, Wind belongs to Crystal, the staff-wielding mage whose role is to unleash raw elemental power at range. It is the player's go-to for dealing wind-element damage in a clean, fast cast that fits neatly between the heavier Fire and Earth spells.

Lore & Background

In the world of the Mana, the four classical elements are not merely forces of nature but living currents woven into the very soil, sky, and sea. Wind is the breath of the world—the invisible river that carries seeds across the Mana Valley, stirs the banners in the port towns, and whips the long grass in the open plains where the heroes first set out. To channel it through a spell is to lend a mortal's will to that endless, restless current.

In Their Own Story

The wind had been still for three days. Portia could feel it in the way the river no longer shimmered, in the way the birds sat silent on the wire above the village square. Sean nocked an arrow, drew it back, and let it fly into the grey sky as if to test whether the air would even carry it. It did, but it fell short.

Crystal stepped forward, her staff tip glowing a faint, sickly green. She closed her eyes. The village children watched from the doorway, breath held. She exhaled—not a word, not a chant, just a long, shuddering breath—and the air *moved*. A ribbon of pale turquoise spiraled out from her staff, widened, and rolled across the plaza like a living thing. The river shivered. The birds scattered. And somewhere beyond the treeline, the first green shoot of a new season cracked open the soil, as if the wind had reminded the earth it was time to wake.

Reader's Guide

Wind is an elemental attack spell cast by Crystal, the staff-wielding member of the trio. It deals wind-element damage to enemies on the field and is one of the four basic elemental spells (Fire, Water, Wind, Earth) available early in the game.

Mana cost: Wind draws from the shared Mana gauge at the top of the screen. The exact cost is modest compared to the heavier Light and Dark spells, making it a reliable option during extended fights when the gauge is partially depleted. You do not need a full gauge to cast it, which makes it a useful filler between more expensive abilities.

Elemental type: Wind. Enemies with a wind-element weakness will take bonus damage; those with a wind-element resistance will take reduced damage. Checking enemy elemental affinities (available in the game's bestiary/enemy info) helps you decide whether Wind is the right tool for a given encounter.

Effect: Crystal channels a gust of wind energy that strikes enemies in the active combat zone. It is a clean, fast-cast offensive spell with no secondary status effect in the base game. Its value lies in speed, reliability, and low mana overhead.

Who can learn it: Crystal is the dedicated spellcaster. Portia (sword) and Sean (bow) do not cast elemental spells; their combat is physical. Crystal's spell loadout is where Wind lives alongside Fire, Water, Earth, and the rarer Light/Dark arts.

Where acquired: Wind becomes available to Crystal as part of her early spell progression. It is one of the first elemental spells unlocked, so players will have it before reaching the mid-game dungeons. No special shop purchase is required—it is tied to story progression and Crystal's growing mastery of the Mana.
