Cyclone
A howling vortex of wind that sweeps the battlefield clean.
Cyclone is a mid-tier wind elemental spell in Secret of Mana, wielded exclusively by the Wind hero—the game's silent protagonist. It conjures a spiraling vortex of forceful air that tears through enemies in a wide area, making it one of the most visually striking offensive spells in the Wind hero's repertoire. In the game's elemental spell system, where each hero is bound to their own element, Cyclone sits at the heart of the Wind hero's combat identity, bridging the gap between a simple gust and the full destructive fury of a true tornado.

Lore & Background
In the world of Secret of Mana, the four elements—Wind, Fire, Water, and Earth—are woven into the very fabric of existence, each channelled through a chosen hero. The Wind hero, a young swordsman of quiet resolve, draws upon the breath of the sky itself. Cyclone is the expression of that breath turned to fury: a column of compressed air spinning upward, shredding the air around it into a roaring maelstrom. Where a basic Wind spell might merely push an enemy aside, Cyclone engulfs them, lifting and tearing with the raw kinetic force of a storm given purpose.
In Their Own Story
The grasslands beyond the ruined watchtower were thick with dust when the Wind hero felt it first—a low, grinding hum in the air, like the world was drawing a long breath. He planted his feet, raised his blade, and let the mana surge up through his arms. The ground shuddered. A column of silver-white wind erupted from the soil, spiraling upward in a tight, screaming helix. Three armored outlaws, mid-charge, were caught in its grip and hurled sideways into the cliff face with a sound like splitting timber. The vortex hung there for a breathless moment, a perfect cylinder of howling air, before dissipating into a warm breeze that ruffled the hero's hair. He lowered his sword. The dust settled. The path ahead was clear.
Reader's Guide
Cyclone is a wind-elemental offensive spell available only to the Wind hero, the game's protagonist. It costs a moderate amount of mana per use, placing it squarely in the mid-tier of the Wind hero's spell list—more expensive than a basic gust but cheaper than the most devastating wind attack available.
The effect is area-based: a swirling tornado erupts and sweeps through enemies in a wide zone, dealing wind-elemental damage to all caught in its path. This makes it especially effective against groups of weak enemies or when you need to clear a screen without spending multiple single-target attacks. Wind-elemental damage is also effective against certain enemy types that are weak to air.
The spell is acquired by visiting the appropriate Mana Spring for the Wind hero's progression. Mana Springs are scattered across the overworld and are marked on the map; visiting one and interacting with it grants the next spell in that hero's elemental line. Once learned, Cyclone is permanently available for the rest of the playthrough.
In practice, Cyclone pairs well with the Wind hero's sword attacks in the Mana combo system. Because it hits multiple enemies, it is a strong choice to slot into a combo chain when you face a dense group, letting you follow up with a single-target finisher on any survivor.
Did You Know?
- Cyclone is exclusive to the Wind hero; the Fire and Water heroes have their own separate spell lines and cannot learn it.
- The spell's area-of-effect nature makes it one of the best value-for-mana options against groups of weaker enemies in the early-to-mid game.
- In Secret of Mana's combat system, spells can be chained together with sword attacks via the Mana gauge, and Cyclone's wide hitbox makes it a natural mid-combo clear.
- The visual design of Cyclone—a full-screen swirling vortex—was one of the more elaborate spell animations on the SNES, showcasing the pre-rendered sprite work that defined the game's look.
